INTRODUCTION TO FRANCESCO BONFANTI
Born in Bassano del Grappa on January 22, 1966, Francesco Bonfanti uttered his first words while sitting in a 1930s Alfa Romeo driven by his father, Luigi Bonfanti, a pioneer of the classic car movement in Italy whose first restoration dates back to 1962, a Lancia Lambda Torpedo from 1928.
Francesco takes his first steps wandering among those glorious vintage four wheels which immediately become part of his DNA.
In 1990, following the sudden passing of his father, he interrupts his studies at the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA. In the same year, at the age of 24, he takes over the management of Bonfanti Garage. A two-time national Kart Champion in 2005 and 2006, he nurtures the business with passion and diligence. Expanding the core business focused on the restoration of pre-war Alfa Romeos, he also embraces other prestigious marques such as Ferrari, Lancia, Isotta Fraschini, Porsche, Maserati, Aston Martin, and even automotive brands which are no longer present today.
He welcomes clients from the United States to Russia, from the Nordic countries to Southern Europe, transforming Bonfanti Garage into an international standard setter for state-of-the-art restoration, as well as a sanctuary and deep knowledge hub for historic cars.
His experience is the result of over 30 years of restoration and consultancy, fine-tuning and road testing, discussions and solutions developed, implemented, and applied for Bonfanti Garage's clients, as well as in the roles he has held such as Technical Commissioner of ASI from 1994 to 1998, Counsellor on the Board of the Registro Italiano Alfa Romeo from 1992 to 2021- for which he has organized numerous national and international rallies - roles he still holds to this day: as Technical Commissioner for the Registro Italiano Alfa Romeo, a position he has held since 1992, where he examines vehicles submitted for the Homologation Certificate; the role of organizer and speaker at significant national and international events, including Le Mitiche Sport a Bassano now called La Leggenda di Bassano, now called Leggenda di Bassano, a role he has held since 1995. In 2020, he founded Bonfanti Garage Club, aimed at spreading knowledge and culture of historic vehicles as a global heritage to be preserved. This is achieved through the extensive production of videos published on the vlog, YouTube channel, and social media.
An expert of pre-war and post-war Alfa Romeo, among the most significant restorations he has undertaken with his team are hundreds of Alfa Romeos from the 1920s to the 1980s. These include the Alfa Romeo 6C 2300 Pescara, formerly from the Scuderia Ferrari in 1934, Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th series with bodywork by Zagato, Touring, Castagna, and Van den Plas, Alfa Romeo 75 Imsa from 1988, as well as Fiat cars from 1909 to 1940, including the Fiat Tipo 5 from 1909. Additionally, there are Lancia cars from 1925 to 1960, such as the Lancia Astura second series Cabriolet by Stabilimenti Farina from 1933, and Isotta Fraschini cars from 1908 to 1931, with over a dozen restorations completed.
Key roles and positions he has held and continues to hold in the world of vintage car collecting:
- Member of the Board of Directors of the Registro Italiano Alfa Romeo from 1992 to 2021
- Member of the Technical Committee of the Registro Italiano Alfa Romeo since 1992
- Member of the committee, organizer and official speaker of La Leggenda di Bassano, an annual international event (formerly Mitiche Sport a Bassano), since 1995
- Member of the organising committee for historic events since 1991
- Member of the jury at international competitions and events
- Organiser of numerous national and international rallies and events on historic motoring since 1991
- Founding member and supporter of the "Bonfanti-Vimar" Automobile Museum, dedicated to his father Luigi Bonfanti
- Owner of Bonfanti Garage since 1990
His profound knowledge of Alfa Romeo begins with his father's work in the Alfa Romeo Experimental Department, where he held the position of National Inspector for Alfa Romeo.
Francesco carries out his role as consultant, researcher, restorer, and technical commissioner with enthusiasm, interest, and boundless passion.
